St. Petersburg “Courageous 12” to be Celebrated
In
the 1960’s and at the height of Civil War, the Courageous 12 are African
American police officers who sued the city of St. Petersburg for racial
discrimination. During those times, Black officers are not allowed to arrest
White people or even issue a ticket to them. They were also not allowed to
patrol in White neighborhoods. The Courageous 12 faced threats and harassment
and put their life at risk for fighting for their equal rights. Today, St.
Petersburg authorities will honor them for their contribution in eliminating
racial discrimination. Out of 12, only one remains alive, Leon Jackson. He will
attend he observance along with St. Pete’s first Black Police Chief, Goliath
Davis.
